Comments: Mar Chiquita is a peculiar beach on the island's northern (Atlantic) seaboard. It is almost entirely surrounded by two limestone formations which spread out to the sea, the easternmost of which is visible in this picture.

Comments: The University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez, which dates from 1911, is a well known college which includes an agricultural station within its campus. The tower building, seen here, is a well-known Mayagüez landmark.

Comments: The Arecibo Observatory is largest single-dish radio telescope in the world. The dish, which measures 305 m (1,000 feet) in diameter, lies over a natural sinkhole, and it is an impressive sight even from a distance.

Comments: Porta Coeli ("the gate to Heaven") is one of the oldest churches in Puerto Rico. Originally erected by the Spanish around 1606, it now houses a religious museum.

Comments: Dry grass and thorny plants are a common sight of southern Puerto Rico. Being on the leeward side of the Cordillera, the Caribbean coast and surrounding plains receive drier winds resulting in a rain shadow effect.

Comments: This picture was taken from Mosquito Pier, looking southwest. Monte Pirata (Mount Pirate) can be seen towards the center of the photo. It is the highest point in Vieques, with an elevation of 300m.

Comments: Ballajá was originally intended as barracks for Spanish troops and their families. Construction of Ballajá began in 1854 and was completed ten years later. It is the latest colonial building built by Spain in the Americas.

Comments: San Felipe del Morro is regarded as the largest fortress in the Caribbean. Intended to guard the entrance to San Juan Bay, it was begun in 1540 and was not completed until the late 1700s.
